The refreshed Utah 50 Goldback celebrates the capstone virtue Libertas, or liberty. Its central scene depicts the historic Golden Spike Ceremony of May 10, 1869 at Promontory Summit, Utah.
Following years of difficult labor by thousands of workers, the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads were finally joined. The completion of the nation's first transcontinental railroad transformed transportation, communication, and commerce, while creating a lasting symbol of connection across the United States.
