The "Big Burn": Commemorating the Great Fire of 1910
This note is more than currency; it is a historical marker. The artwork explicitly commemorates the Great Fire of 1910 (also known as "The Big Burn"), a cataclysmic event that incinerated 3 million acres of Northern Idaho and Western Montana in just two days.
Changing History: The Big Burn was the crucible that forged the modern U.S. Forest Service. Before 1910, debate raged over whether to let fires burn naturally. After the devastation of Wallace, Idaho, and the heroic sacrifice of 87 firefighters, the policy shifted to total fire suppression (the famous "10 AM Rule"). This tragedy changed how America managed its forests for the next century.
